ReportFactory Lite v2601: Pixel-Perfect Documents for Oracle APEX — Now with PowerPoint, PDF Security, and a Browser Console

Every enterprise application eventually has to produce a real document. An invoice a customer will actually pay against. A GST-compliant tax statement. A delivery note, a certificate, a board pack. The screen can be as modern as you like, but at some point the business needs a clean, printable, pixel-perfect artefact — and that is where a lot of otherwise well-run projects quietly lose weeks.

We see this pattern constantly in our Oracle APEX delivery work. The application gets built fast; then the reporting requirements arrive, and the team is suddenly hand-building print layouts, wrestling page breaks, and duplicating logic every time a new document is needed. This post looks at why that happens, and how the latest ReportFactory Lite release changes the economics of it — including PowerPoint output, PDF security, and a browser-based file console.

Why document generation is the quiet bottleneck

Screen design and document design are different disciplines. A web page reflows; a printed document is fixed — precise margins, headers and footers, conditional logos and signatures, tables that break cleanly across pages, barcodes and QR codes that must scan. Reproducing that by hand, per document, is slow to build and slower to maintain. And the moment finance asks for "the same thing, but in Excel," or a customer asks for a Word copy, the effort multiplies.

The common ways teams solve this each come with a trade-off. Building it by hand gives full control but never stops costing developer time. Standing up a full reporting server adds infrastructure and licensing to own. Sending data to a cloud reporting service is quick to start, but for regulated, on-premise, or security-conscious environments, shipping your data off-site simply isn't an option.

A different approach: a small, self-hosted engine

ReportFactory Lite takes a deliberately narrow approach. It is a lightweight, self-hosted service that does one thing well: you design a template once, POST your data as JSON, and get the finished document back from a single HTTP call. It is built on the proven JasperReports libraries — not JasperServer, so there is no separate server licence to buy — and it never connects to your database. Data is passed as a JSON payload, which means no database ports are opened and, crucially, your data never leaves your premises.

For Oracle APEX teams, that design is a natural fit. In our engagements, the reporting layer is often the piece that outlives the rest of the build, so keeping it small, template-driven, and owned in-house pays off long after go-live. One customer — a SaaS dealer-management platform — moved their entire print output onto this engine and now generates over 50,000 documents a month at zero recurring cost, with report build time down from weeks to hours.

What's new in this release

This release focuses on breadth of output and on operating the engine safely in real environments.

PowerPoint (PPTX) output. A single template now produces seven formats: PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX), PowerPoint (PPTX), HTML, RTF and ODT. Design once, deliver however each recipient needs it — the same source template, no rebuild per format.

PDF password protection. Sensitive output — payslips, financial statements, private certificates — can now be password-protected at export, so the document itself is secured, not just the channel it travels over.

Built-in File Console. A browser UI to manage templates, assets, generated reports, logs and extension jars — without shell access to the server. It's protected by its own keys and can be locked to specific IP addresses, so template updates no longer require an SSH session and an infrastructure ticket.

Deploy your way. Run the standalone application, or drop the WAR into Apache Tomcat 9.x. Either way it stays self-hosted.

Offline, per-server licensing. Licence keys are verified fully offline and bound per server — no phone-home — which makes the engine viable even in air-gapped deployments.
